Well, I've now been on vacation long enough that I have no idea what day it is. I keep asking people and immediately forget what they answered, 'cause it doesn't even matter. Don't worry, I'm actually getting some work done so I'm not being completely lazy. Just nice to take the pace of life a little more slowly.

So yes, we are having a great Holiday season so far here in Maryland. Lots of time with family, at home and in the studio, too.

I hope you had a lovely Christmas. I'll leave you now with a picture of the tiniest amp, which is a recent addition to our little Vox collection.

this is a nice time of year. i don't like it so much as autumn, but i like the idea of it more. i like that we have a month to try to put stuff up on our free singles club that with get us all in the spirit. i don't know if we're up to the challenge, but we'll give it a shot. and i was thinking we'd make some of our best christmasy releases from last year available again... you know, for anyone who might have missed them. and then we have some nice things planned for the free singles club next year. i am excited to continue putting stuff out there that i love, and listen to new demos all the time. i feel very fortunate. hope everyone's doing well. i miss you.

Yesterday...

-Slept in

-Watched some squirrels play and fed them bread and chips (they like hint of lime)

-Discussed how excited we are about the Two Wounded Birds release (it sounds amazing)

-Made cupcakes for no particular reason

-Bought an unnatural amount of coffee from Starbucks

-wrote an 8 page paper about art from 1200-1400 (Justin did this, not I)

It was a nice day. I wish I had pictures (mainly of the squirrels), but I've been bad about that lately. But people can change, so there's hope for more visually interesting posts in the future.

We're going to start recording Christmas music this week. It's the most wonderful time of the year!

Well, i'm somewhere in europe and I'm wishing I was home. I am grateful I assure you, but after a year of this I just miss my friends, and my own bed, and other things a little. It's so crazy that we're actually about to put out actual stuff. I have everything on a rush order because Two Wounded Birds are on tour with us now and I want them to have some cds to sell! Tonight Johnny Danger and I traded jackets. I think we were both just ready for a change. I haven't worn a jean jacket in a while, and Johnny looks quite nice in my aviator jacket. Andrew from the Young Friends wore it on halloween as part of an Indiana Jones costume, and it worked quite well for that too. we all hung out with the guys form the band Cut Your Hair tonight. they are nice. It is 4:36 am in Spain and there is still some raging party going on outside. I am going to watch Milo and Otis and go to sleep. It's actually a very intense film.

Halloween is over, the Great Pumpkin came and vanished again until next year. Of course this doesn't mean we no longer have anything to look forward to, there is still plenty of pumpkin pie to be eaten, fireplaces to be lit, the coming of snow and new Christmas songs to be written. Oh Canada!

"Oh Canada!" was the name of an amazing circlevision film that used to be shown at the Canadian pavilion at Epcot. That might still be the name of the film there, but it was updated some time ago and isn't nearly as good. But when it was the old one (the true one) Caleb and I used to go see it all the time, I forget why. We had some sort of strange fascination with Canada. Maybe it was because we grew up in northern Ohio, right near the border but we never crossed the line. Well, yesterday I went to Canada for the first time and it was amazing, everything I imagined. Nothing spectacular happened, just all the trees and how crisp the air was and all that. I wish Caleb had been there. He just missed it, he was on tour with us (playing drum for the Young Friends) up until a few days ago. Life's funny like that. This morning I woke up and got in the car and ate a nice sandwich while listening to Joel Alme, which is probably my perfect soundtrack to being in Canada. And now here's that hit song by the Field Mice:

World Travles (Part 2)

I arrived yesterday from a short tour with Taken By Trees in South America. What an interesting country. I spent most of my time in Brazil (São Paulo, Recife & Fortaleza) but Buenos Aires, Argentina was the best. What a romantic city! It didn't have the exotic/tropical feel of Brazil, it carried more of a Rome vibe. The architecture was perfect and the temperature was mild. All four shows went well despite the technical hiccups here and there. Hopefully I will make it back to Argentina soon, I was hit with an unexpected reciprocal fee of $140.00USD just to enter the country, apparently we charge them, so they now charge us. But all was reimbursed and I now have a nice slip in my passport that allows me in for free for the next 10 years. I'm sure I'll see you again Argentina!

It was a gray, rainy fall day here in Maryland, which just so happens to be my favorite kind. I opened up the windows in my classroom, and my students wrote poems about how much they like rain. It was just that kind of day...it was nice.

I finally got the Days 7" from Shelflife. I've loved Days since Jacob first introduced them to me a long while ago, but I kept forgetting to order their release. Fall reminded me, though, because I always feel like listening to their music this time of year.

I don't think life is ever boring, but things are getting particularly exciting around here. Amongst other things, Justin and I spent the whole weekend painting our new recording studio space.

It's fairly large, so even after two days of painting (with some breaks in-between for sleeping and apple-picking), we're still only half way finished.

Lots more work to do, but it's the good kind of work. Everything is just falling into place, and I'm trying to stay on top of it all and not waste any opportunities. I'm so excited to share more news soon!

On Sunday night Justin and I met up with our fellow Holiday crew at a show in DC. All of the bands who played (the Drums, Surfer Blood, Young Friends) have been part of our singles club; it was delightful to have everyone in one place. People probably don't use the word "delightful" anymore, but it was, ok? So much love.

i've been all around the world and i've been wondering why every country has such interesting looking money and ours is sort of bland and normal. but the more time i spend away the more i think our money looks quite nice and very classic. this is the new penny, i was surprised to see how classic it looks. it's like captain america's shield. this post is going to seem dumb and pointless pretty soon... when everyone has this penny. actually maybe it already is, maybe this penny has been in circulation for months and i'm just so out of touch that i didn't know. this may very well be the case. anyway, i like it. america!

i just had what should have been the craziest night of my life, but it was actually just a blur. i'm on a bus out of gothenburg now, where we played a show this morning. connor and i were meant to dj tonight at a secret party on a hill, in the woods. as soon as we got there, to this strange location packed with hundreds of people, Jens Lekman introduced himself to me. i told him i was a big fan and he was very kind and everything you would hope him to be! and then in the next five minuted this is what happened: we stared djing, i met Frederick from The Embassy, Joakim from jj, Joel from Air France was there too (i'd met him earlier that night and we had a wonderful conversation about everything you'd imagine), then i think i met someone that i fell in love with (but that's really hard to say for sure, and what are the odds of ever finding each other again?), then in the middle of our second song the equipment stopped working and we left because we didn't want to be late for our bus departure. i still can't believe it. i probably should have written all this in my diary, but you know...

you anyone that is reading this was there, i'd like to apologize for running off like that, i couldn't help it.

well, it seems as though this blog has been seriously neglected for some time now! i am sorry for that. you know, life is crazy sometimes (like this monkey smoking). but the truth is we are working very hard behind the scenes to turn this label around, to really get things off the ground! of course we will always have free singles... the vinyl won't diminish that, it's just so that you'll have something to remember us by when we're dead.

so what's this picture all about? well, it's a still form a nice movie i just watched called "the misadventures of merlin jones". i decided i'm only going to watch nice, old movies from now on. i think it's a good idea. i stopped watching horror movies a few years ago, and movies that were rated R a bit latter, but now i think i need to take it to the next level and only watch movies that are truly "pleasant". i'm not tryin to push my beliefs on you, i'm just telling you whats going on in my life. everyone must chose their own path. just, please, really think about these things. love you.

Here is a link to a recent article published by The Independent (a national daily newspaper in the UK) about the changing face of the recording industry, Holiday Records is talked about along with the labels started by Jack White and that guy from Kings of Leon. I don't understand how things like this happen, but I'm sure this has something to do with why our bandwidth is always running out. We are sorry and trying to find a solution. We're unprepared and ill equipped. Is love not enough?

we were playing a concert last week at the windmill in london and there was this girl there. i thought she was probably the prettiest girl i'd ever seen in real life, and she dressed cool. i tried to talk to her and i told her that i thought she looked like Annemari Davies from the Field Mice (she looked just like her! this photo at least). i asked her if she'd ever heard of the field mice and she said no. actually all she ever said was no and it led me to believe she didn't speak english. then she bowed very low and weirdly and left. letter that night she approached me and gave me one of those marijuana cigarettes. i said thank you, i thought it was very nice of her, sort of like an indian offering a pilgrim a peace pipe. then when she left i gave it to some guy standing next to me, cause i don't like that stuff.

If you haven't heard, Jonsi (from Sigur Ros) is releasing a solo album this spring. I just heard the first single, Boy Lilikoi, last night. It's most similar to the up-beat side of Sigur Ros (like Gobbledigook), but is actually sung in English. I don't have anything against Icelandic or made-up languages, but I've gotta admit that being able to understand the lyrics is a major plus for the lyric-obsessed (uh, me).

So Justin and I spent a lovely little Holiday here in my most favorite state, Mary-land. It was kind enough to snow the weekend before Christmas, and stay cold so things didn't get all grey and slushy, so we had a white Christmas. Happy times, friends. Happy times.

The first album we listened to in 2010, by the way, was this little gem:

I'm thinking this (latest mewithoutYou) and the God Help the Girl albums are my favorite 2009 releases. Though I must admit that most of the albums I bought weren't '09 releases, so my opinion isn't entirely well-rounded. BUT! Great albums nevertheless.

its mid morning, and the newly weds have just arrived to the orlando international airport. they make their way stumbling with all their bags to the counter so they can receive their ticket, they were going to italy, and they couldnt be more in love. the husband looks down at all the bags that they were checking, and says to his wife "you shoulda brought the piano"
she sighs, this is the beginning of all his complaining i suppose and says "i wish that you wouldnt be such a smart alec.

Sometimes (ok, a lot of times) I just get stuck on certain songs. Lately it's been Perfection as a Hipster by God Help the Girl. The first 60 seconds, particularly... the rest of the song is ok but it's mainly the first verse. Neil Hannon's voice just kills me... so unexpected. And the delightful Stuart Murdoch melody kills me too, of course.

Well, the Holiday Records cookies ended up being sugar cookies with cinnamon-vanilla icing, thanks to Andy and Jacob's suggestions. They are a little too sweet, but very good in spite (or maybe because) of that. I couldn't help myself, so I just had to add the little hearts.

Sigh. Anyway, lots of exciting things are happening around here. We've got a ton of great music to share...can't wait for you to hear it all. (The new Bonfire Kids definitely made my day!) Stay tuned and happy Friday.

i was meeting my friend Aimmee uptown for what i thought was just a business lunch. turns out she was taking me to the American Museum of Natural History to see Journey To The Stars narrated by Academy Award-winning actress Whoopi Goldberg!!! i know, calm down jake. it was amazing! and then... we saw dinosaurs:

so, update. but first lets do this. i want all of you to imagine the worst thing ever, the complete worst thing ever in the whole world. alright...now, thats what was happening to me. let me tell you, alright, wait, we'll back track for just a second.

ive lived in california for about 9 months now. some things. anyways, i used to live with my brother jake, and jacob is the one that has always cut my hair. forever, always even when we were kids. little children.

so its been awhile since ive had a hair cut. tonight, i could not sleep. my hair was in my face, i was all sweaty cause i have so much hair and no heat could escape from the top of my head, oh my god, am i right? of course i am. so now i want you to imagine the worst thing in the world ever, again...cause that might be what i did to my hair.

who knows, i think i'll be fine. i sorta had to take a break from it, cause its so dang hot in this house. i couldnt cut it anymore, it was all stuck to my forehead, i know, the worst! ill finish it up tomorrow.

but, dont worry, i think it actually looks sorta good. and all of you just wait till tomorrow. just wait until you run into me tomorrow. anyways

no atcually ill say a little bit more. i had no idea they were doing these, i cant wait. i guess they're trying to release all the peanuts specials by the decade they were released in. 6 per release it seems, which is sorta silly since its a two disc set, and probably 12 could fit on one disc alone. but still, very very very much excited for these, and so happy that they are finally doing this. another 6 more years, and they will be done release on the strips.

This week's release is a little something Justin and I have been working on together since last spring. We were thinking of releasing them as Acorn Boys songs at first, and then we realized that might be a little weird since I'm not a boy. Acorn...BoysandaGirl? A little too complicated.

So Church Library it is. Three songs made with acoustic guitar, girl vocals and lots of heart. Hope you like 'em!

Funny Story or On A Plane At Night Volume Two

so yesterday..(or maybe it was two days ago.. i'm a little confused) when we were waiting for a car to go to the airport i found a hat on the road and now i have a new had. but that's not the story, that's just how i got my new hat. so we're on this overnight flight to london and i'm sitting in a row with four lovely black women. well, when you're on international flights you have to fill out these cards with all of your passport info, occupation and stuff like that. all the cards are passed out and i get a pen out of my bag to fill it out and just when i pressed the pen to the paper there was a brilliant explosion of black ink! it was everywhere, all over my hands, the tray table. just a mess and the more i tried to help matters the more i just smeared ink into the tray table. after much laughter from my row someone gave me a napkin, which didn't do a whole lot of good but was a nice gesture.

so 2 week until today our sink has been overflowing. we havent been able to turn it on for 2 weeks, and dirty water would come up from the drain, fill up the sink, and overflow onto the floor/into our silwerware drawer. all of our dishes were gross, the sink was gross...smelled so bad. but they finally fixed it today. i spent 3 hours cleaning it all up, every single dish, mopped the floors, washed all of our towls that were on the floor. eww.

so after all my hard gross work, and for working hard all week, i decided to treat myself. got on ebay, and saw that there was an auction for a starfyler 59 leave here a stranger vinyl. TOOOOooooOOOOO cool! ending in a couple of hours. there has only been a hundred of them printed.

so you are now looking at the typing of a child who has bought himself starflyer 59's leave here a stranger on vinyl. i won! have a good week you.

I found this record the other day at the thrift store. It looks like it should be the coolest record ever. It has a Service Records feel to it, and the label that put this out is called Passport Records. I guess I was thinking I found an early form of the Embassy from 1980 But it's like a bad rendition of the Talking Heads. Well, at least I have a new piece of art to hang up on my wall.

SURFER BLOOD

My band, Horse Shoes played at the Pop Mayhem festival in Gainesville Fl last week. It was a fun show because it was the first time I've had an opportunity to see Surfer Blood live. I normally hate the idea of covering songs, and I've never even considered it until now. This is just my favorite song in the world. I've never identified with a song more than this. After listening to it twenty times a day for the past few months I think I just came to the conclusion that I couldn't get it out of my system any other way. And the song had such a limited release i felt like it was a real shame that more people hadn't heard it. I don't know that we did it justice, and we certainly weren't trying to make it better or different, maybe we we were just being selfish, but I'm glad of it and I hope you enjoy, or relate to it as well.

the second part of the friendship series is out now, telephone friends. part one would be america live. still feeling very creative. i think telephone friends is some of my best work, but still thinking that i can do better, and that i cant wait to see the future, and all of you can see it with us. thanks for being apart of this, we all love holidays.
